The recent closure of the A59 at Kex Gill due to instability in the ground below the road caused traffic problems. The road has a history of instability and although it is now open under traffic light control, the Harrogate Council Executive are to be asked about adopting a new route for the road which would avoid the area of instability.
A new line for the important trans-Pennine route will be discussed at a meeting of the Executive on Tuesday 24 July and a proposal to realign the route to the other side of the valley is due to be discussed. Last year, a Public consultation gained 90% support for realignment of the route and a further, local, consultation this year, also showed strong support for the idea.
You can read more about this, and view the maps of the proposed realignment, here.
