Sex sells. I've fallen for sexy book titles since Stephen Covey's 7 Titles of Highly Effective People over 20 years ago. But what's moved me more? The marketing people's body copy on Amazon's description that stirs my insecurities.

Our greatest fears are death, public speaking and not being good enough. The copywriters know this so they twist the knife so we start to question ourselves in a way that had never occurred to us before starting to read the blurb.

We become mugs for the writers' promises of certainty. We're raised on "The one way to..." so we're easily persuaded that this new book isn't just Shelf Development. I've bought the books but they never seemed enough so I just had to buy the seminars, training courses, CDs, DVDs and online programmes too. As my friend Liz says "I've done more courses than Red Rum."

We don't need MORE information on what to do. We need insights on why we're not already doing what we know we should be doing.

We're going to learn to succeed like we learned to walk by falling over.

We're going to learn how to sell like we learned to ride a bike by wobbling and falling off.

Success isn't like wiring a plug - there's no one way to do the big stuff.

All we can do is keep trying stuff, see what works, change direction when it doesn't, try new ideas.

So when do those ideas come to us?

When we're driving, in the shower, walking the dog - when we're not thinking about stuff and our mind isn't going 345mph.

When we're talking to someone else who asks us a new question and prompts a new solution.

A fresh perspective.

That's where I start my work with clients - helping them to a fresh perspective.

The one that turns 1 year contracts into 4 year contracts - easily.

The one that suggests a new product that quadruples order value.

The one that improves conversion rates by 800%.

Get in touch if you're up for a fresh perspective.

And if you're not, don't fall for somebody else's success porn
