The Local Fund For Harrogate

THE LOCAL FUND for the Harrogate District will provide grant funding to community groups and charities across the District. It will focus on addressing needs, clearly identified in The Vital Signs Report for the district, by supporting the work of community groups and charities whose work is dedicated to improving the lives of people who live in this area. These needs are: Inequality and Hidden Poverty, Mental Health and Wellbeing, and Loneliness and Social Isolation.

Designed to encourage local giving, it will provide a long-term source of funding support and encouragement to the work of local organisations, regardless of size, tackling serious social issues that affect our community.

Where will the money come from and how will it develop?

As well as the grants that the Fund was able to distribute in 2018, we hope to build THE LOCAL FUND so that by December 2019 we have a significant endowment fund of £2m. As a result, in addition to grants made from smaller donations, the ongoing income from the endowment will provide a legacy of charitable grant-giving for the long term.

The Fund will comprise of donations from:

  • Local businesses and organisations

  • Philanthropists and key business owners

  • Both active and dormant trust funds

  • The Local Lotto for Harrogate District

It will be managed by Two Ridings Community Foundation, an independent North Yorkshire charity which specialises in setting up and managing charitable trusts.

What is ‘Friends of THE LOCAL FUND for the Harrogate District’?

This is a group of like-minded people and organisations who wish to encourage charitable giving and generate support for THE LOCAL FUND for the Harrogate District. A ‘Friend’ would make a modest time commitment to help ensure the success of the Fund by:

  • Acting as an ambassador for the Fund at events and meetings

  • Helping to spread the word about the Fund

  • Identifying potential donors and applicants to the Fund

  • Promoting the various ways to donate

  • Possibly making a donation themselves, though this is not a pre-requisite

Anyone who is passionate about the Harrogate District and would like to make a difference for local people and our communities can become a Friend of THE LOCAL FUND.

What does supporting THE LOCAL FUND do for the Harrogate District?

By giving to THE LOCAL FUND you will be making a difference to the communities in which we all live and work. Cutbacks are unfortunately here to stay and the public are aware of this: THE LOCAL FUND has been established to enable a wide range of local charities and community groups to enhance their services in the face of austerity cuts.

Donations to THE LOCAL FUND for the Harrogate District will be used either as direct grants or consolidated into the fund, the income from which is available as grants. Either way, this enables THE LOCAL FUND to do more: e.g. offer larger amounts and small amounts to a larger number of organisations. Furthermore, this can be a tax efficient vehicle for local giving and it enables your donations to reach the organisations with a ‘smaller voice’.

If you already have your own – perhaps dormant – fund, we can give it a new lease of life and enable you to distribute funds in accordance with your founding charitable objects and there will be less administration time for you as TRCF does it for you.

The marketing and administration of grants will be undertaken by the experienced Two Ridings Community Fund and there is a fair and transparent application process in place.

The fund is not a quick fix – it is for the benefit of local people both now and into the future. This is your opportunity to invest in the future of our District.

What are the Benefits of being a Donor and a Friend?

You will be making a tangible contribution to the Harrogate District both now and into the future. You will be able to gain positive PR from being associated with this high profile fund and there will be a feel good factor for you and/or employees from supporting the communities in which you and they live and work. Attendance at events will mean that you can meet people from organisations that you have helped, and connect with other Friends. You will receive regular up-dates about THE LOCAL FUND and, if you’re a business, you could use our Friend of THE LOCAL FUND logo as a promotional tool.
