What Is Reflexology?

Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is an ancient holistic practice that helps to activate the body’s natural abilities to heal itself. It involves the application of pressure to the feet and sometimes the hands using specific thumb, finger and hand techniques. The feet are divided into zones which correspond to parts of the body. Massaging the feet will therefore effect a physical change in the body.

Often used to release stress and tension because both of these can be a factor in worsening many health issues because stress blocks energy in your body. Reflexology works to release this blocked energy allowing the body to achieve a better and more healthy balance.

In addition to releasing stress and tension, reflexology can also help increase blood circulation, release toxins, reduce pain and can induce a deep state of relaxation.

What Happens When I Go?

Most reflexology sessions last about 60 minutes. The session will not be painful but it is a deep massage and therefore firm pressure is used. Your therapist will check regularly to ensure that you are comfortable with the pressure level throughout. One question which almost everyone asks is “will it tickle” since many people do have ticklish feet. It doesn’t tickle due to the firm but comfortable pressure that is applied throughout.

How Often Do I Go? It is quite safe to go for a reflexology session as frequently as you feel the need. The benefits of each session should last on average around 4 – 5 days. Some people feel that a weekly visit is perfect for maintaining a healthy level of relaxation and keeping stress at bay. Others prefer a monthly session and find this is sufficient.
